New life for Cambodia’s ancient artistic heritage

othello AMRITA Performing Arts is an international performing arts production company with US Nonprofit status, based in Cambodia.

Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning 'eternity', AMRITA works to promote and sustain the revival and preservation of all forms of traditional Cambodian performing arts, emphasizing national capacity building in production management and administration.

DIN 2AMRITA collaborates with the artists of the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and freelance artists in researching and producing professionally staged traditional and classical performances both in Cambodia and abroad, while developing and encouraging artists' expressive potential in contemporary theater, dance and music through workshops, curriculum- building initiatives, regional exchange programs and international tours.

ANA: Arts Network Asia

After a one year break, ANA has started up again and is now hosted by Theaterworks in Singapore.   ANA is committed to contemporary, cross cultural exchange within Asia, primarily with Asian artists.   The new program is eager to encourage more applications from Cambodian performance and visual artists as the Mekong region takes on a more prominent role in the new ANA program.  Amrita is honored to be on the newly formed panel.

For the 2007 cycle, two awards went to Cambodian artists including:

Linda Saphan: to support an exchange among female artists through the new Selapak Neari Center, promoting dialogue between local and regional women artists.

Phok Narin: to support a two week study tour for students of Phnom Penh's National School of Circus to the Hanoi School of Circus.

WDA World Dance Alliance

In January 2006 Cambodia was officially welcomed as the newest member of World Dance Alliance.  This is an extraordinary opportunity for our young dancers who are eager to network with their counterparts throughout the world as we slowly explore the world of contemporary dance in the context of how it relates to a previous emphasis on revival and preservation.  Amrita is the president of the Cambodian chapter and is also the chair for the WDA network on promotion and management.  Upcoming events include the WDA Global Summit in Brisbane from July 12 - 18 2008.

Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA)

Many of the aritsts involved with Amrita's projects come from the University of Fine Arts - both teachers and students.  RUFA is Cambodia's primary training institution for all forms of performing and plastic arts, the former of which is set up in two primary sections; the High School of the performing arts and the BA program, both based on one campus under the heading of the Royal University of Fine Arts (BA) and the National School of Fine Arts (high school).  RUFA and NSFA's home for the performance faculties known as the North Campus since the end of the Khmer Rouge recently fell victim to a massive land deal and is now being converted into a shopping mall.  The new campus has been in operation since early 2006.  There is one enormous drawback in that the new campus is seven kilomoters further outside the city; many students and teachers cannot afford the extra amount of petrol needed to cover the greater distance so consequently there has been a severe drop out rate.  The new campus includes a theater but we are not yet presenting performances there because of the difficulty in getting audiences to travel the distance so for now most of our performances are taking place at the Chenla Theater, opposite the Intercontinental Hotel.
